Unit 30 D2

Impact of formats and techniques on file size and image quality.
File format- This screenshots shows that I have used different file formats for different size of the file and the image quality. Top left picture is the original (244K), to the right the file type is GIF (37.66K), then JPEG (56.84K) and the last picture file format is PNG-24 (114.1K). All file formats have different image quality as they have different file sizes.

Compression techniques- This screenshots shows different compression techniques of one file format. The first one is of course the original. Next to the original the quality is set to maximum, then high and the last one low. Of course maximum quality will have the biggest file size and the best quality of image right after original. Whereas low quality will have the lowest file size and the worst quality of the image.

Colour depth- This screenshots shows different colour depths of the image using GIF format. Like in the screenshots above, the first picture is original which means that nothing is changed. Next to the original GIF has 256 colours which is the highest that can be chosen in photoshop. In bottom left GIF has 128 colours and the last one only 64 colours. It is really hard to see the difference in the screenshot but there is a big difference between all four pictures. All three GIF’s don’t have a big difference in file size whereas image quality difference is pretty big.

Unit 30 D1

For this task I am going to describe and evaluate the ongoing developments in these printing or output techniques. Below there is a list of things I have to describe.

Vinyl cutters and laser cutters for signage.  Explain:
  • Vehicle wrapping process- Vehicle wrapping process is pretty simple. First of all the specific shape, colours of design need to be set on the computer in a program used for vehicle wrapping. After the design is finished on the program, it then needs to be sent to vinyl cutter in order to print it. After the design is printer, it is then ready to be put onto vehicle.
  • Illuminated shop signs, how are they made?- Illuminated shop signs are created the same way as vehicle wrapping, but the ink is different for vinyl cutter and laser cutter is used in order to cut out the shape of the sign.
  • What file types are required for these cutters/printers?- Vinyl cutter only accepts vector, and programs that use vector output are programs such as FreeHand or Illustrator. Prefered formatted files are Macintosh but it can convert Windows files when necessary. For laser cutter the output is vector but some of the can accept bitmap such as 2D design.
Inkjet & wide format printing for bitmap displays and posters. Explain:
  • Printing directly onto wood, plastic, glass etc.- This type of a printer is completely different than normal printer, but the process is the same. These type of printers use wood, plastic or glass as their material to print design onto, whereas normal printer would use a paper. Once the design is finished, it then needs to be printed directly onto material, which means that a material is placed on the printer, and little box with ink inside goes over the whole material which prints the design directly onto material.
  • Where would these prints be used? Give examples.- Wood printing would be used in restaurants or parks. Glass printing could be used in banks, offices or school. Plastic printing would be used in schools or shops.
  • What file types are required for these printers?- File type used for Inkjet and wide format printing is mostly vector as these type of printers are huge so the quality of design would be pretty bad if it would be bitmap.
Laser printers for leaflets and flyers. Explain:
  • How they print.- A laser beam projects an image of the page to be printed onto an organic photoconductors. Photoconductivity allows the charged electrons to move away from the areas exposed to light. Powdered ink particles are then electrostatically attracted to the charged areas of the drum that have not been laser-beamed. The drum then transfers the image onto paper by direct contact. In the last step the paper is passed onto a finisher, which uses very strong heat to instantly cool down the toner/image onto the paper.
  • What's the maximum thickness for the paper/card.- Different printers have different maximum weight load, but the average is around 60 lsb/162 gsm.
  • Duplex printing, collating and stapling.- Not all of the laser printers have duplex printing option, but when they do the way it works is that they have additional hardware that reverses each sheet to apply another page on the back of it. Collating is for sorting multiple copy jobs. If a person doesn’t choose to collate three copies of a two page document, it would be 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2. But if the document would be collated, it would be 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2. Some printer have stapling option built-in so a person can mark if he wants his document stapled straight after the printing is done.
  • What file types are required for these cutters/printers?- File type used for laser printers is mostly bitmap (Photoshop), but it reads vector (Illustrator) as well depending on what program is used to create the document.
3D printing. Explain:
  • How it works- First of all the product needs to be designed in a specific program or just download any file from the internet. After this is done, it then needs to be sent to the 3D printer in order to start making the product. The way product is made, is that specific plastic is used as a material and then it creates layers by melting plastic in printhead. After the layers are finished, the product is finished and ready to be used.
  • What file types are required for 3D printers?- 3D printers use STL (Standard Tessellation Language) which is a file format native to the stereolithography CAD software created by 3D Systems. This file type is commonly used for prototyping and computer-aided manufacturing.

Unit 30 P5

For P5 one of my class mates had to tell me what to change in my logo. In that case Milosz Sankowski told me to change everything about the text and as you can see, I have accomplished this.
